Your support can help children with special needs like Catalina
Parents all fear that moment when they could be told their child has a major medical issue. When Catalina was born prematurely at 30 weeks, she seemed to be okay. But at 18 months of age, Catalina suddenly became paralyzed. Doctors discovered she had tumors in her spinal column, all the way up to her brain stem. Her mom, Brittany, says it was a scary time, and the family feared Catalina wouldn’t celebrate her second birthday.
After the first surgery, Catalina got some function back in her hands. With a second operation, she was able to wiggle her legs. Catalina began her recovery with First Steps, an agency supported by the WHAS Crusade for Children. Catalina also participates in therapeutic riding at the REATH Center, another agency supported by the Crusade.
The child who was once paralyzed less than six months ago now has spunky attitude and enjoys dances with her dad. Thanks in part agencies supported by the WHAS Crusade for Children, like First Steps and The REATH Center, Brittany says the goal is to have Catalina running around like any other child her age. Since 2010, the REATH Center has received $37,000 in Crusade grants for their therapeutic riding program to make life better for children like Catalina.

The WHAS Crusade for Children raises money for agencies, schools and hospitals that provide direct services to children with special needs in Kentucky and southern Indiana. The Crusade grants 100% of all donations to more than 200 organizations throughout Kentuckiana. Together as a running community, we have the power to make life better for children with special needs.
